Description of Work

Black Mountain Center accepts applications on a continuous recruitment basis for registered nurses. We will accept applications for trainee appointments if we are unable to extend a job offer to current applicant pool. The nursing department is responsible for providing quality-nursing services to all individuals residing at Black Mountain Center. 
 

The nurses are assigned by units. Black Mountain Center consists of five units, three of which are residential units for the Developmentally Disabled and two are the Black Mountain Center Alzheimer's program. 
 

The Lead Nurse provides professional nursing care and encourages independent functioning with care being individualized rather than routine and focuses on the promotion of the resident's rights and decision making. The Lead Nurse is an integral part of the interdisciplinary team, which shares responsibility with other team members for related needs to insure an integrated approach to care for the individuals residing at Black Mountain Center.

Description of Work

Black Mountain Center has continuous recruitment for practical nurses. 
 

Provides practical nursing services to Alzheimer's clients. Functions include health promotion, education and maintenance activities, restorative and preventive care, all provided under the supervision of a RN. The LPN is an integral part of the interdisciplinary team, sharing responsibility for nursing needs for clients with supervising RN and sharing responsibility with other team members for related needs (social, spiritual, psychological, medical, etc.), To insure an integrated approach to training the clients, thereby preparing them for placement in the least restrictive residence. The LPN reports directly to the supervising RN and the nursing supervisor.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of practical nursing techniques and the routine care and treatment of all types of clients and the ability to apply it to the areas of work, considerable knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene, basic health and safety practices applicable to the area of work, skills in preparing and administering medications, and general knowledge of proper dosage, effects and contraindications, and skill in the operation of general and specialized equipment used in the area of assignment and general knowledge of the equipment's function.
 

Ability to make acute observations of client's condition and report conditions and changes accurately; ability to remain calm and function efficiently in emergency and stressful situations; ability to understand, interpret and relate oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients and families and with other employees.


Training and Experience Requirements

Graduation from a state accredited program of practical nurse education and one year of practical nurse experience; which includes advanced or inservice training in the area to which assigned; or graduation from a state accredited program of practical nurse education including a pharmacology course, or completion of an approved pharmacology course upon graduation, which provides the knowledges, skills, and abilities needed for the administration of medications required by the work setting (typically in a hospital, infirmary, or mental retardation center); or an equivalent combination of training and experience. 
 

Necessary special qualification - a current license to practice as a practical nurse in North Carolina by the N.C. Board of Nursing.

Nurse (RN) lead primary purpose is to provide professional and quality care to the individuals residing at Black Mountain Center while encouraging independent functioning. Responsible for identifying health problems needing a physician's attention and working closely with the physician to provide medical care. Is an integral part of the interdisciplinary team and works closely with them to insure an integrated approach to care for the individual.

Knowledge and skills in application of nursing theory; knowledge of medications and their proper dosage, effects and contraindications; knowledge and skill in CPR.

Ability to plan and organize assigned work; ability to make verbal reports and written reports and documentation; ability to formulate an accurate assessment; ability to discriminate between urgencies and emergencies and provide appropriate action.
