BUD LEWIS GROUP
North Carolina Medallion Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service 2007

The Bud Lewis Group has received the North Carolina Medallion Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. Created in 2007, this award was presented to the top 20 volunteers in the state. Most of the members of this group have volunteered weekly for twenty-two years providing musical entertainment for the residents of Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center.

In 1986, Bud Lewis and his band began their volunteer journey at Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center entertaining the residents every Tuesday night. The band currently consists of Bud Lewis, Bud’s two sons, John Lewis and Jeff Lewis, Bud’s daughter-in-law, LeeAnn Lewis and his granddaughter, Lilly Faye Lewis. Other band members are Bob Pruett, Bud Owenby, Bobbie Owenby, Norman Willie, Susan Perry and Don Kirchner. John Lewis lives in Burnsville, NC and makes a 108-mile round trip every week to volunteer. Of these eleven volunteers, six of them are in their twenty second year of volunteer service.

The band presents a variety of music including bluegrass, gospel, popular, old time favorites and camp songs. The audience joins in with the singing and many residents are asked to perform along with the band. For many of the residents, this activity is the highlight of their week.

Every member of the band possesses the ability to relate to the residents in a way that could prove to be a difficult challenge for any volunteer. They become acquainted with the residents on a personal level and reach out to them on an individual basis with special songs performed especially for them.

Personally witnessing the loving spirit of this group on any given Tuesday night enables you to see the true meaning of volunteer service. Through music, smiles and laughter, the lives of the residents are greatly enhanced by the presence of these exemplary volunteers.

Volunteer Reception - March 30, 2008

Joyce Black-Woerz
2008 Volunteer of the Year

In October 2006, Joyce began her volunteer journey at Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center. As a gifted artist, she became interested in the art activities at the Center and soon endeared herself to many of the residents by working one-on-one with them - thus leading them to accomplish great things. She donates her time and talent on a weekly basis.

Joyce is dedicated, dependable, patient and thoughtful as she interacts with the residents. She works with Sue Hayes, one of the Creative-Expressive Art Therapists. Sue is quoted as saying, “Joyce is an inspiration to me. She is very patient when talking with the residents and treats them with respect and kindness. All of us have gained a lot from having her here.”

Joyce works with both Developmental Disabilities residents and Alzheimer’s residents. During the recent Fine Arts Week Celebration that was held at Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center, most of the displayed works of residents were the ones that Joyce had assisted with their completion.

Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center is honored to name Joyce Black-Woerz as the 2008 Volunteer of the Year.
