Black Mountain Center began as a satellite unit of Western Carolina Center in 1977. In 1982, the facility was officially separated from Western,
becoming the 5th State DD Center. In 1988, the Legislature appropriated funds to establish at Black Mountain Center a program for the care and treatment of persons in the mid-stage of Alzheimer's Disease, who because of combative
and assaultive behaviors, are typically unable to find placements in local nursing homes.
In 2004, the Specialized Developmental Disabilities Program was created to meet the needs of people who are aging and have medical needs.
